Joy Orbison

UK urban music is at an interesting junction right now. After 2-Step splintered around the turn of the millennium, we got Dubstep, Grime and Bassline House. Now we have Funky, the latest permutation in the dynamic continuum London's sonic culture

This nascent scene is essentially a Frankensteining of 2-Steps offshoots peppered with some dancehall flavor and, interestingly enough, some classic New York style house ala Masters At Work (it's been about 20 years after all- so it can be officially considered retro).

Joy Orbison, with the eminent release of summertime anthem Hyph Mngo on Hotflush, has positioned himself at the center of this swirling nexus of this trans-generational new sound.

Check out this smoking mix, he did for a preview of what is sure to be a huge sound in the coming year.
